Rolfing® Structural Integration(SI) is a process oriented bodywork therapy that works as a catalyst for moving you out of your old movement habits and back to feeling more at home in your physical body. The originator of this therapy, Dr. Ida Rolf - PhD, Biochemistry, postulated that the changes we see from this work were the result of stretching fascia back into some ideal position. Science has helped us understand this is not the case but we're still grappling with what actually happens during a series of sessions, because something definitely happens -- something that doesn't necessarily happen with regular massage. Even the "deep tissue" or so called "fascia stretching." You will feel different when you get up from a Rolfing session, even more so after a series of sessions.
The pain thing; don't let anyone plough excruciatingly through your body in the name of Rolfing or fascia mashing. Good bodywork should not hurt.
The woo thing; Rolfing SI isn't "energy or quantum healing" though some may practice it as such. This is totally hands-on stuff that will help you re-orient to the world differently, even from the very first session. A series of sessions with the right practitioner can be life changing.
We use meaningful, directed touch and movement to help integrate areas of the body that for whatever reasons may not be in sync or moving freely enough. We help you find ground and connections more completely through your whole body, rather than simply focusing on your problem area. There's also a very good chance of reducing your levels of pain once those areas get unstuck and integrated into a more balanced and aware system.
Treatment typically involves a series of 3, 5 or 10 sessions tailored to your needs. If you're new to Rolfing SI I do recommend a 10-series but it's not absolute. The pressure of this therapy ranges from super light to somewhat deep, but always within your comfort range and again, it should never hurt. The point is to help you feel better, to be MORE comfortable in your body not less.
